Because every drop counts: Make your water usage management more efficient and cost-effective with our state-of-the-art water meters.
Discover how our advanced metering technology helps you conserve resources and ensure precise, consumption-based billing. At ista, we provide a complete range of hot and cold water flow meters for every need and all types of properties – from apartments and houses to large-scale commercial installations.
Our modular water meter system offers three flexible options: contact, radio, or M-Bus. Even the smallest leaks, such as a dripping tap, are detected and included in the billing process, giving you complete transparency and control.
We have further enhanced our domaqua® m domestic water meter, making it an all-rounder for a wide range of residential applications. This modular surface water meter supports multiple technologies – radio, M-Bus, or contact – all within a single device.
The domaqua® m is a single-jet impeller meter featuring a magnetic coupling and roller counter, ensuring reliable transmission of the impeller’s rotation to the counter. By default, it comes with a pre-installed blank module, which can be easily removed at any time – providing the foundation for seamless modular upgrades.
Designed for precise measurement, this surface water meter is ideal for recording smaller consumption volumes, such as in apartment units. With various installation lengths, it allows for easy replacement of existing meters.
As a dry-run meter, the domaqua® m delivers high measurement accuracy, capturing even minimal flow rates while ensuring a long service life. Its robust design prevents foreign particles or deposits from entering the roller counter, and the housing effectively shields against splashing water.
For remote data collection, a contact module transforms the domaqua® m into a remote-readable version, that can be connected to automated reading systems, such as central control or building management systems. The plug-in modules have a lifespan of ten years – even if the meter itself has to be replaced due to mandatory calibration periods.

Our smart water meters use the latest technology to accurately measure hot and cold water consumption in any building. The smart technology also gives you access to ista's convenient water meter services - including automatic billing, real-time consumption monitoring and more.
Precise metering technology allows for accurate recording and consumption-based billing of water usage. ista’s smart water meters feature a built-in wireless interface, enabling remote reading and automatic data transmission at pre-set intervals. This ensures accurate, timely, and hassle-free monitoring of water consumption.
The compact, modular design allows for flexible installation and integration with various communication protocols, including contact, radio, and M-Bus, which enables regular monitoring of an entire building’s water consumption, providing seamless and efficient data management. Additionally, ultrasonic measurement options provide enhanced precision. The system can be tailored to specific on-site requirements, ensuring maximum efficiency.
Each meter is designed for dry operation, preventing water exposure to mechanical parts. This helps eliminate deposit buildup, ensuring long-term measurement accuracy.
In addition, remotely readable water meters offer maximum convenience for consumption-based water and heating billing. Since the devices automatically record and process consumption data electronically, there is no need for on-site meter readings inside apartments.
ista offers water meters for every need – from compact models for residential use to high-capacity meters for large apartment complexes and commercial properties. Reliable, precise, and built for seamless integration.
The istameter® m water meter is the advanced evolution of the widely trusted original istameter®. As a modular water meter, it provides a single solution for practically all technologies and applications, making it the benchmark for a sophisticated, fully integrated metering system.
As a full dry-run meter, the istameter® m ensures enhanced operational reliability and measurement accuracy. The counter mechanism does not come into contact with flowing water, preventing deposits from accumulating in the register. The istameter® m is mounted on installation components. This means that even when the meter needs to be replaced, for example after the calibration period, all other installation components remain in place. It can be installed horizontally or vertically, with the register adjustable to the desired position. Retrofitting to existing supply lines, for example when renovating older buildings, is easy thanks to the valve connection.
As standard, the istameter® m is delivered with a pre-installed blank module. The design ensures that this blank module can be quickly and easily removed at any time, providing the basis for a modular water meter. By adding the contact module, the istameter® m becomes a remote reading version for even greater efficiency.
Application Areas
The complete istameter® m system with meters, built-in components and accessories offers a wide range of possible uses in the home, e.g. on the shut-off valve, on the bath or shower tap, under wash basins or kitchen sinks or in existing in-wall meter cabinets.
Key Advantages
• Future-proof technology with a modular design
• Comprehensive metering system for hot and cold water in residential settings
• Easy replacement thanks to the separation of the meter and installation components
• Wide range of applications due to high model variety
• High measurement accuracy and reliability
• Available with nominal flow rates of Qn 1.5 m³/h and Qn 2.5 m³/h
• Available with permanent flow rates of Q₃ 2.5 m³/h and Q₃ 4 m³/h
Domestic water meters are designed for large flow rates. They are sophisticated, rugged and durable multi-jet impeller meters. As fully dry-running meters with magnetic coupling, domestic water meters are designed to record hot water consumption. For cold water, a wet-rotor meter with particularly low pressure loss is used.
Application Areas
Domestic water meters have a nominal flow rate of Q3 4, Q3 10 or Q3 16 m3/h. They can also be equipped with a contact output, which allows them to be integrated into a radio system.
Key Advantages
• High measurement accuracy over the entire measurement range, even at extreme loads
• Technically mature, precise, durable devices
• Easy to install
• Available as cold and hot water meters
Like domestic water meters, bulk water meters are designed for very high flow rates. Also known as Woltmann meters, their low-wear, low-friction impeller bearings (tungsten carbide / sapphire) provide excellent measurement accuracy even at high loads. Bulk water meters are fully dry running meters with magnetic coupling.
Application Areas
The large water meters with a nominal flow rate of Q3 25 - Q3 250 m3/h are designed for very high loads. They are available in the WS version for horizontal installation and in the WP version for horizontal installation as well as for rising and falling pipes.
Key Advantages
• High measurement accuracy even under extreme loads
• Technically mature, precise, durable devices
• Easy to install
A water meter (colloquially also known as a water clock) measures the volume of flowing water. There is a distinction between cold and hot water meters: hot water meters are used for water temperatures ranging from 30 to 90 °C, whereas cold water meters are used for water temperatures up to 30 °C.
Hot water meters are used in residential units when hot water is centrally heated in a boiler located in the basement. This ensures that hot water costs can be fairly allocated based on consumption in the heating cost statement.
With a rental or warranty maintenance contract, water meters are read by one of our ista Service Partners. If remote-readable water meters are installed, individual apartments no longer need to be accessed. All consumption data is automatically recorded and electronically processed, eliminating the need for meter reading appointments with residents.
Depending on the building and layout, the water meter is located in different places within the apartment or centrally in the basement on the main supply line. In rental apartments, the water meter is usually located in the kitchen and/or bathroom. If it is not visibly placed under the sink, it is often hidden behind a panel at the riser pipe. In a detached house, the water meter is typically installed next to the main shut-off valve in the basement or utility room. If a water meter has not yet been installed in your apartment, it can also be retrofitted onto the apartment shut-off valve.
All meters must comply with the European Measuring Instruments Directive (MID). This directive specifies that water meters must measure with an accuracy of +/-5% in the low flow range. In addition, cold water meters must measure with an accuracy of +/-2% and hot water meters must measure with an accuracy of +/-3% in the continuous load range. These values correspond to the German calibration error limits. The national legal limits for permissible measurement errors remain unchanged in Germany and are set at twice the calibration error limits.
